Smart Cities
Built for the Urban Environment
Live energy data, remote management and predictive analytics. All in one powerful platform
As cities across the UK look to modernise critical infrastructure, reduce emissions, and unlock the full potential of connected technologies, Metpow provides a low-cost, scalable metering platform designed to underpin intelligent urban operations. Already live in Plymouth and expanding across multiple councils, our system enables real-time energy visibility, control, and accountability across a diverse set of city applications.
Metpow’s smart metering platform is engineered for the complexities of urban environments. Built on resilient LoRaWAN architecture with optional GSM fallback, our solution connects seamlessly to street furniture and utility endpoints – from lamp posts to market stalls – without requiring trenching, complex cabling, or disruption to existing assets. Whether the objective is tackling unauthorised power draws, optimising peak load schedules, or preparing for city-wide electrification, Metpow offers a field-proven digital backbone.
Our IoT-enabled meters deliver precise, timestamped readings via edge gateways to our secure cloud environment, where local authorities can view, analyse and act through a purpose-built dashboard. Advanced AI reporting and predictive analytics surface usage anomalies, balance peak loads across the local distribution network, and enable councils to model different carbon and consumption scenarios using digital twins.
Applications include powering CCTV installations with full accountability and alerts, delivering regulated power access to pop-up vendors and temporary markets, improving energy planning for events, and ensuring resilience across public lighting systems. Our data model supports full ESG reporting and carbon accounting standards, providing credible insights for sustainability officers and environmental auditors alike.
By digitising the last mile of urban power, Metpow empowers cities to move from reactive management to proactive optimisation. Our insights layer delivers actionable intelligence that improves service uptime, lowers operational costs, and ensures environmental targets are not only met but measured. With the UK’s grid under increasing strain, Metpow also supports renewable load integration and demand-side flexibility across city-owned infrastructure.
Metpow delivers intelligent metering to support low-carbon city infrastructure
Metpow is proud to partner with Plymouth City Council on a pioneering waterfront energy project that’s setting the benchmark for smart urban infrastructure. As part of the city’s clean energy drive, Metpow has deployed LoRaWAN-enabled submetering across five new electric hook-up points along Hoe Road, allowing vendors to power their equipment with clean electricity instead of diesel generators.
The system enables the council to monitor real-time consumption, track carbon savings, and ensure accurate, automated billing – all from a cloud-based dashboard. This delivers cleaner air, reduced noise, and improved operational conditions for vendors, while offering the city valuable insights into energy use at the street level.
Plymouth Powers Up for a Smarter Future
Backed by the UK Shared Prosperity Fund and Plymouth Waterfront Partnership, the initiative demonstrates how smart, connected infrastructure can deliver environmental impact, support local businesses, and future-proof city services. Plymouth is the first of several councils set to roll out Metpow’s technology in 2025.
“Modern city infrastructure brings more endpoints and more complexity. Metpow simplifies that with one central system to monitor energy use, manage assets, and surface insights. Our work with Plymouth shows how new tech can be deployed at street level and still stay easy to control at city scale.”
